Earth Friendly Play Dough Recipe


There's one in every group. One of your kids ate the play dough at school and now feels sick. Fret not teachers and parents, we have a recipe that is not only earth friendly but friendly on those curious tummies as well.

How to Make Earth Friendly Play Dough:
Materials Needed:
1 cup flour (not self-rising) 
1/2 cup salt1 cup water 
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1-1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
Food Coloring (optional)
Sauce Pan
Stove
Air tight container

The Procedure: Mix in saucepan over low heat. (It does not have to heat long.) Dough is ready when it rolls into a ball. Keep dough fresh in an airtight container. If you need to make different colors, add food coloring while mixing over heat.

  1. Love playdough! Just fyi, the Cream of Tarter in the recipe is only a preservative so, if you find it too cost prohibitive, you can leave it out. It just doesn't last as long; although, the preservative only acts to make it last longer in a "home" version...playdough goes bad (with or without the preservative) in the classroom too soon for it to make a difference...

    in other words, I leave the cream of tartar out every time because it's not worth the cost for school playdough

  2. Thanks for the tip, Jenni! Come to think of it, we only add cream of tartar if it's on hand....
    We store it in tupperware to keep it moist, but definitely not to keep it a long time. With so many little hand on it we make fresh batches regularly.

  3. I haven't made this in awhile! While I student taught, my son was in daycare and his teachers made homemade playdough. He loved playing with it.
